What can you do for a weekend in Budapest?

Budapest, Hungary, is a great destination for a city-break. The city looks stunning both in summer and winter. It is a touristic spot for various reasons: culture, food & wine, spa and thermal bath. If you are looking for a weekend getaway, make sure you search flights to Budapest too.

Here is what you can do in Budapest:

 1. Take a walking tour

You do not necessary have to have a guide. If you prefer more freedom over the itinerary you can look for a private tour, or just do your research in advance and plan your day. You can see the most important sites in about one day. Make sure you add to your visit: Opera house and the Jewish Quarter; Heroes's square and  the National museum. In the afternoon, make your way up to Castle Hill and see the Fisherman's Bastion for a view over the capital. You can take the funicular up here.

2. View Budapest from above

Beside the Bastion, there are more spots around the city for a panoramic view. For instance, go up the Gellert Hill. See the Fortress  from 1854 and admire the city from above.

3. Do a wine tasting

Hungary is known for its great wine, so if you are only there for a weekend, make sure you do a wine tasting. You can combine it with your dinner. There a few options to choose from, but the most popular one is Faust Wine Cellar.

4. Do a River cruise

It might sound like a cliche, but you should do a cruise on the Danube. You can choose a fancy one with dinner on board. But can also simply join a boat tour to see the city. I would recommend you to do it by night, or some time in the evening. The Parliament looks better with the lights on. Plus it is more romantic :)

5. Relax in the Thermal bath

You most probably saw all the tourists doing that. So you can go to Szechenyi for the most popular thermal baths. However, there are more to choose from: Gellert or Lukas Thermal baths. However, if you have a lower budget but still wanna try this experience the Kirly Bath might be for you. Also are not as crowded. Personally I find the location unique as this Turkish bath dates to 1565.

6. Relax on Margaret island

Speaking of Baths, there is one on Margaret island too, if you would like to combine the two experiences. The island is a silence oasis where locals, but now tourists too, escape the city and go for a walk, drive the weird-looking vehicles or simply have a picnic. Moreover, you can climb the Water tower for a panoramic view.

7. Enjoy the local dishes

While the food is quite heavy, very meaty, it  tastes divine. Try the traditional Goulash. Have a langos as a snack while walking around. Eat a fisherman's soup. And treat yourself with the Somloi Galuska - a layered chocolate cake with walnuts and rum. Especially during cold winter days, the best snack would be a Kurtos Kalacs, follow the incredible smell and you will find the food cart :) Oh, of course, nevertheless, the traditional Dobos cake.

The end

There is a lot to do and see in Budapest. If you only got a weekend, prioritize your interests. If possible stay a few extra nights to explore all the city and food.

Finishing with the cakes, made me hungry, so I will leave you here to plan your trip to Budapest. Let me know what you have done in Budapest :)

Take care and see the world!
