What can you do on a weekend in Vienna
I had the pleasure to see this city with locals in a coldish weekend of September. I met these people in Barcelona, when we all lived there, and we decided to meet again, so I paid them a visit. Here is what I did that weekend in Vienna
1. Visit Schonbrunn Palace
Maybe the most iconic place in Vienna, Schonbrunn Palace is located in a large park, uphill, overlooking the capital. It is best for a relaxing morning. Just walk around the park, visit the castle, take many picture. You will get to see locals running or biking around, and tourists taking photos.
2. Visit Belvedere Palace and its garden
I do not know if it was because we visit it early in the morning, or September isn't the most popular month for trips to Vienna, but we literally had the place for ourselves. Very quite, (as I said we went early in the morning, on a Monday) and totally tourists free, we could admire the beauty of the palace but also walk, undisturbed, through the garden. I would advise you to do the same: wake up early!
3. St Stephan Cathedral and the city center
Well, for sure you will be doing it, but I will just mention it anyways: visit the city center. There are nice building all around. Take a glimpse of the inside of the St Stephan's Cathedral. You should add to your tour the Opera House and the Hofburg Palace (Presidencial house). See Rathauspark, in winter there is an ice rink through the park, so you can ice skate around. Spend the afternoon in the Museum Quarter.
4. See Vienna from above from Danube tower
The tallest landmark in Vienna is the Danube tower. From the top you can see far over the city :) Enjoy a coffee and an apple tart in the cafeteria on top.
5. Have a meal in Naschmarkt
The Naschmarkt is a local market, quite touristy, where you can buy treats for you or for home. But also, you can just stop by for a breakfast, or a quick lunch. It is centrally located, so you will be close by other attractions you plan on seeing. There are also stands with chocolate, dry fruits or nuts. You can take some to-go, and snack on while walking around.
6. Eat the local dessert: Sachertorte
If you are in Vienna there a few foods you have to try. The world-wide known: Vienna Schnitzel for start. The traditional Apple tart is a good midday snack with your coffee. Of course, the sausages are the go-to fast-food option here. But you should also have the Sachertorte. This is a dessert with a long history. It was first made in 1832 for Prince Metternich. The most popular place for this is Hotel Sacher, but locals say is just as good in other cafes around town (the queue at Hotel Sacher is normally long). Lets not forget the beer. Try some local one: eg. Stiegl.

7. Enjoy some Mozart candies while walking around
Maybe you will not find this advice anywhere :))) It will not be the healthiest choice anyways. This is what I did on my last day in Vienna. and it was by far, the best walk I've ever had. Of course, you have to try the marzipan sweets. There are a few candy shops around town. You can find a large variety of sweets to choose from. But the Mozart candy is a popular souvenir for your loved ones. Also try the Mozart Liquor :)
